Bricks Without Straw, developed the LegislateWV application for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad in 2010.LegislateWV allows users to search for information on legislators, pending or current legislation and maps of the State Capitol--with just a few swipes on a touch screen all while on-the-go.

“The state Capitol building can be a confusing place, even if you work there every day,” he notes. "I was trying to find info on the web to contact one of our senators. As nice as the Legislature's website is on the computer, navigating it on the iPhone was a chore. I also needed access to a map of the complex.”

Special Olympics West Virginia

Organization Bio
Founded as a day camp in 1968 in Parkersburg, Special Olympics West Virginia now holds four multi-day competitions throughout the state for more than 5,000 athletes, both children and adults, who are mentally challenged.

Organization bio: The Roark-Sullivan Lifeway Center is an independent non-profit agency serving the Kanawha Valley for 30 years, providing housing and supportive services for individuals 18 years and older experiencing homelessness. 

Company story
With a limited budget and staff, the Roark-Sullivan Lifeway Center struggled to maintain a website with current information. The organization’s newsletter also was sorely outdated, notes CEO Alex Alston.

While the organization’s outreach has tripled over its 30 years, the nonprofit was concentrating its resources on assisting the individuals it serves, leaving less resources for things like sleek communication, Alston says.

In 2007, Jamie Summers-Brown approached the organization to offer pro bono newsletter design and printing, web design and annual reports through Bricks Without Straw.
